About the Artist

A versatile musician for whom “alternative or avant-garde approaches to his instrument are only part of the everyday tool kit” (Georgia Straight), clarinetist Liam Hockley is a dedicated advocate for new and experimental music.

Liam was an interpretation prizewinner at the 16th Stockhausen–Konzert und –Kurse Kürten in 2015. Recent concert engagements include Vancouver New Music, Music on Main’s Modulus Festival (Vancouver), the SALT New Music Festival and Symposium (Victoria), Vancouver Pro Musica, KLANGRAUM (Düsseldorf, DE), Quiet City (Vancouver), A Place to Listen (Victoria), NUNC! (Evanston, USA), and the Kuandu Arts Festival (Taipei). He has currently released a solo basset horn album for the Aural Terrains label and has contributed to releases on Redshift Records, CMC Centrediscs, and Parma Records.

Liam holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in clarinet performance from the University of British Columbia. He teaches at the Victoria Conservatory of Music, is the co-founder/director of the Arbour Concert Series, and maintains an active freelance schedule as a soloist and ensemble musician in Vancouver and on Vancouver Island.
